Special Exhibition: Speaking Out! 1960 - 1980
Title: Rev. Samuel McKinney, Mayor Gordon Clinton, and Rev. Mance Jackson at anti-segregation march, Seattle, 1963
Date: ca. 1963
Caption: I remember reading a Seattle Urban League study where a realtor responded to a housing request from a black person: "Nothing available here. It's our policy: no pets or Negroes." In 1963, Reverend Mance Jackson organized a march in Seattle, sponsored by CORE and NAACP. We wanted people to see that discrimination in jobs and housing was a problem in Seattle, not just far away in Alabama and Mississippi. The march started at Mt. Zion church and ended at Westlake Mall. I donated all the signs for the march -- they read "Stop Racial Discrimination Now." -Sam Smith
