Awarded Grants

In the year 2000, BHS was awarded a grant from the King County Landmarks and Heritage Program to interview African Americans who had attended local high schools during the 1930s. As the elders of the community at that time, it was deemed important to preserve their history. They were the eye witnesses to events that occurred during those years, and the effect on African Americans in this area.

In 2007, BHS is continuing on its quest to document the local African-American experience by applying for and receiving another grant from 4Culture to interview 1940s high school attendees. Such documentation will present the unique first-hand knowledge and views from each individual's perspective of those years.
